Description

Memorial to the 98 civilians captured by the Japanese after the Battle of Wake Island on December 8, 1941. After a successful American air raid on October 5, 1943, Japan Navy Captain Shigematsu Sakaibara ordered the execution of 98 POWs who were taken to the northern end of the island on October 7, 1943, blindfolded, and machine-gunned. The remains of the murdered civilians were exhumed and reburied in section G at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii.
